Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist, talks about depression. In this video he discusses the how psychology and psychiatry differ from their approach to depression. Is depression really a chemical imbalance in the brain or a psychological problem? Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin. SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no …

I had depression for 6 years and I can say that I agree with his views. I am drug free and depression free. It is very hard to change our thought patterns and brain circuitry, but it can be done with challenging yourself, counseling, healthy diet, exercise, being around supportive people, believing in yourself, etc etc. Be patient and gentle with yourself but never give up.

Have you thought about why you have had lifelong anxiety/depression? It almost always is due to traumatic childhood. I implore you to only use drugs as a last resort, because they are harmful to the body and cause other health problems over time. Anyways, a main point of the video is to not be fooled by the biochemical hoax. I checked it myself and there’s not a single peer-reviewed journal article linking antidepressants to a biochemical imbalance!

his basis is the thousands of people who have had severe side effects even while tapering. Some people have even had permanent damage to their body, such as post-SSRI sexual dysfunction.

yes, but those people are CERTAINLY the minority. Also, there are risks in coming off of ANY medication…blood pressure meds, statins, sexual enhancement medication, medication for pain, etc…there are risks in starting, stopping, and tapering ALL medication. The good these meds do most definately outweighs the bad in most cases. The psudoscience, psycho babel this man uses makes him a QUACK…here’s some advice…pick up a medical textbook before you listen to him.

psych meds are a safe and FDA approved medically proven way to deal with mental illness. This is, of course, when these meds are perscribed correctly and used correctly. These medications put together with therapies like cognitive therapy and others are medically proven to overcome mental illness…to think there are people who take what this quack says as gospel…very scary
5:35 pm
I agree, except I think that the bads outweigh the goods for most uses of drugs. I also agree that it is good to educate ourselves. There is not a single respectable medical textbook that says that depression is caused by a biochemical imbalance.

look, who gives a shit what causes depression…the point is that antidepressants WORK and they work by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain.

depression is nothing chemical at all. it is an emotional imbalence that an be triggured by certain traumers in life(excuse the spelling) i think all anti depressants do is realese endorphians. to give you a false sense of happiness. allthough that can help stall depression. ur mind still knows how u feel and could eventually get alot worse. people do misunderstand depression. people commenly think it is a mental illness. its not. depression is atually in that normal box.

sorry run out of space. depression affects all in different ways. some hardge through rushing life. some show signs of lerthagy. (excuse the spelling) some cause pain to them selves. and some just end their life entirly. i know im repeating alot of what you sauid but still im in the mood to type. and this is the most worthy thing to type about. i have suffered from depression for a long time. allthough not being diagnosed. u dnt need to be. you know how depression feels.

again run out of space.there are many forms of depression. theres feeling sad. as you said. where you just feel things are going wrong. and everyone goes through that. its nothing seriousbut you do get some mre serious forms. its basially the same. but the causes would be more extreme. like could loes your job. could make u feel a little depressed. more extreme. is like loesing a business and going bankrupt. loesing your pet. then theres loesing your wife.

theres not really a way to react to depression. its more something that happens as you watch. (depending what form depression has taken) i have been fighting my way through alone mostly. and im starting to feel better. but ive had to do and say things to people. and had to turn my back on some people. ahh well im tired and these ear phones have been in my ears for ages and its starting to hurt.. 5;13 in the morning and im yet to sleep.

Its true your chance of a mental break go up with meds. Mental cracks or fissures start to happen I believe %99 based on environmental concerns and anxiety. Its important to have a postive outlook on life Goals and self motivation to accomplish tasks. Which is if you have cancer death in the family’s or other learned behaviors such as loss or disillusionment. Its important to asses private or personal goals to become aware of fulfillment. WHICH IS TOTALLY LACKING IN US SOCIETY.
11:53 pm
If you need to be self medicated to cope its a start but be aware that dependancy will increase the symptoms so while your smoking weed take some time to self asses important goals and personal goals to feel fulfilled.

The number of views this quack gets is really scary. Don’t trust a serious mental illness to vitamins and quackery. Mental illness does exist and it can be dangerous in its severe forms.

Uptown, where did you get your phd from; the back of a box of corn pops ?
I’ve dealt with “depression” for years. and I’ve tried many different medications so I know from personal experience Dr. Breeding knows his trade.
Having said that, I wouldn’t hesitate to pop a benzo if I had a huge panic attack. And I’ve taken medication before that did help by diminishing symptoms.
As I see it. the common theme in Dr Breedings videos is that psychiatry is a pseudo science & meds aren’t the cure

I’ve been depressed my whole life and never really know it. I just looked at some pictures of me as a little kid the other day and said to myself “Damn, that is one sad kid.” … Looking back over the years, it was great. The few times in my life where “insanity” rose me up were epic and seemingly spiritual. It’s sort of like being tortured and then pampered. One feels so much better only because of the other, but if you have one without the other, it just isn’t the same.

i want to talk to you if thats ok with you. i get depressed and stuff. and i have sort of moved away from religion. i like to believe that i am still muslim becaue nothing other then that seems right. i believe in god anf i believe in the prophets but other then that i am not sure. i am in a stage where one thing that i do believe in is heaven and hell and that stops me from commiting suicide.. do u wnat to talk to me? ill send you a private message.

Medication is definitely not the cure, but sometimes it’s necessary in order to motivate the depressed person to find the cure. I’ve been depressed for quite a while, and I know for a fact that I would not have made the progress I have made without an antidepressant to help clear the fog a little. People who haven’t had depression can’t understand how horrible that fog is. But I definitely do not want to take these my entire life.

@bjc333
You have all my respect for what you say. I take the risk to say I do now what you are talking about. I had my cry for help to psychiatry, but that would be a long talk.
I think the point of all videos of this Dr. John Breeding is about the dangerous generalization. I would recommend to take a look at the other videos of him, specially “the truth about mental illness”, or something, where he describes how mental illness is defined currently.
Wish you truthfully the best.

Oh, and I would like to give a suggestion for people to trust at psychiatry:
1.make an appointment. I dare you to leave the room without a prescription.
2. Look for any healing case.
3. Talk to someone who spent more then a year under treatment. You’ll see that what is happen is lottery. They fill people with many combinations of drugs until the desired effects arises. Tell me about science.

…and thanks for the video, heh.

this video left me very confused.

this man is full of myths…antidepressants hard to withdraw from? what is his basis for saying this? perhaps he means stopping the drug right away produces unwanted withdrawl symptoms…but that goes for any med….this guy is a quack
